  5. The beech-fir forest, the baseline natural forest ecosystem in the montane belt of temperate Europe: questioning an ecological myth

The present study aims to challenge and refine the existing paradigm of relict primary forests located located in temperate Europe and to clarify their long-term dynamics. We focussed on the beech-fir Fagus sylvatica peat bog Romania and one lake France in proximity to six best-preserved Old-Growth Forests OGFs complemented these OGFs from the postglacial forest recovery and to highlight the main anthropogenic phases since c. biodiversity observed in contemporary OGFs can be attributed to the characteristics of maturity that have emerged

  6. On the ecological impact of prehistoric hunter-gatherers in Europe: Early Holocene (Mesolithic) and Last Interglacial (Neanderthal) foragers compared

evidence of human impact on landscapes dating back to the Late Pleistocene long before the advent of agriculture vegetation patterns in Europe during these periods. To explore this issue we used an upgraded version of agent-based model ABM combined with a genetic algorithm to generate vegetation change scenarios. By comparing outputs with pollen-based reconstructions we aimed to identify parameter values that yield HUMLAND results natural fires and climatic fluctuations alone lead to vegetation cover estimates that are inconsistent
